Caravan is an English Canterbury-scene band founded 1968 in Whitstable, Kent, by David Sinclair (keyboards), Richard Sinclair (bass, vocals), Pye Hastings (guitar, vocals) and Richard Coughlan (drums). All the members were previously in the band Wilde Flowers alongside future Soft Machine members Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers and Hugh Hopper. The band's sound is characteristic of other Canterbury-scene bands blending psych, rock, prog and a touch of jazz. The band's deut release Caravan was good, but their next two albums If I Could Do It All Over Again I'd Do It All Over You and In the Land of Grey and Pink that really established their reputation as one of the UK's most critically acclaimed psych/prog outfits. The band underwent many lineup changes but carried on performing and releasing excellent work to the present day. Outstanding albums include Caravan, If I Could do it All Over Again I'd do it All Over You, In The Land of Grey and Pink, Waterloo Lily, For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night, Caravan and the New Symphonia (Live) and the excellent archival release The Show of Our Lives: Live at the BBC 1968-1975.
