Crowbar is an American sludge metal band formed 1990 in New Orleans, Louisiana, by frontman Kirk Windstein (vocals, guitar), Craig Nunenmacher (Drums), Todd Strange (Bass), and Kevin Noonan (Guitar). The lineup has undergone many changes to the present day with Kirk Windstein the sole constant member. Through infusing a slow, low-keyed, brooding doom metal sound with the aggression of hardcore punk, they pioneered a style known as sludge metal alongside other bands of the New Orleans heavy metal scene such as Eyehategod, Soilent Green, Acid Bath and Down. Both Windstein and Todd Strange were in the band Down from it's inception, and Windstein is still a member. Crowbar's debut studio album Obedience Thru Suffering (1991) failed to achieve significant sales or airplay, however the follow-up, 1993's self-titled album, produced by Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual) got national promotion on MTV's Headbanger's Ball, plus the videos for "All I Had (I Gave)" and "Existence Is Punishment" were played on Beavis and Butt-Head. Following this success, the band went on to record music videos, embark on major tours with Pantera, and record more albums. To-date they have released 12 studio albums with standouts including Crowbar (1993), Broken Glass (1996), Odd Fellows Rest (1998) and Sonic Excess in it's Purest Form (2001). The band is also known for covering other bands' material and putting a heavy spin on it. They covered Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver" on Equilibrium, Iron Maiden's "Remember Tomorrow" on Odd Fellows Rest, and Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" on Crowbar.
