David Gilmour CBE is an English guitarist, singer and songwriter born 1946 in Cambridge, UK. Gilmour is primarily known as the guitarist and co-vocalist for Pink Floyd, from 1967 to their final breakup in 2015. Gilmour met future bandmates Syd Barrett and Roger Waters at high school in Cambridge. He remained friends with Barrett and even busked around France and Spain with him in 1965 before Barrett returned to London to form Pink Floyd with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright. In 1967 Nick Mason invited Gilmour to replace Barrett due to Syd's rapidly deteriorating mental state. Prior to joining Floyd, Gilmour was a member of mediocre blues-rock outfit Jokers Wild, later to be renamed Bullitt. As a full member of Pink Floyd, Gilmour's first contribution was on the two albums released in 1969: Ummagumma and Soundtrack from the Film "More", although he also contributed session work on Floyd's second album A Saucerful of Secrets, to help complete that album during Syd's meltdown. From that point Gilmour increasingly influenced Pink Floyd's sound with his brilliant guitar work, vocals and songwriting. He played on every Pink Floyd album except Piper at the Gates of Dawn. As a soloist, Gilmour has five studio albums starting with 1978's self-titled release, plus two collaboration albums with The Orb. He has also released two superb live albums Live in Gdansk (2008) and Live in Pompeii (2017) which cover his solo work and some classic Pink Floyd compositions. Standout albums include David Gilmour (1978), On an Island (2006), Live in Gdansk (2008), Live in Pompeii (2017), and his latest studio album Luck and Strange (2024). Gilmour has also been active as a producer of other artists' work, including names such as Kate Bush and Roy Harper. He is also very generous with his time and financial resources towards various charities.
