David Sylvian | Artist
David Batt aka David Sylvian is an English Art-Pop singer-songwriter and musician born 1958 in London. Sylvian first came to prominence in the late 1970s as frontman for the band Japan whose androgynous look and electronic sound were an important influence on the UK's New Romantic scene. Sylvian kicked-off his solo career with the excellent 1984 album Brilliant Trees, which featured Steve jansen from Japan, as well as Holger Czukay from German group Can. The album was critically well received and heralded the collaborations Sylvian would have throughout his career with experimentalists like Czukay, such as Robert Fripp, Riuichi Sakamoto and Russell Mills. He followed up with two more superb albums Gone to Earth ('86) and Secrets of the Beehive ('87), which increasingly incorporated electronics and ambient elements, firmly establishing Sylvian as one of the UK's leading composers and performers of sophisticated chamber pop, art pop and ambient pop styles. Sylvian has released 16 solo albums including collaborations with the aforementioned artists. While now semi-retired from music, he still composes sound works and visual art works. Standout solo albums include Brilliant Trees, Gone to Earth, Secrets of the Beehive, Dead Bees on a Cake and Blemish. Also recommended are Snow Borne Sorrow, by side project Nine Horses, plus the Sylvian/Fripp collaborations First Day ('93) and their superb live album Damage ('94).
