Echolyn is an American progressive rock band formed 1989 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, by Paul Ramsey (drums, percussion), Brett Kull (guitar, vocals), Ray Weston (bass, vocals), Christopher Buzby (keyboards, backing vocals) and Jesse Reyes (bass). Thomas Hyatt (bass) replaced Reys in 1990. Several of the band members came from formed band Narcissus, to recreate a style of music that captured the essence of "classic" progressive rock bands of previous decades. Echolyn have cited Genesis, Wilco, Gentle Giant, Yes, Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, ELO and The Beatles as influences. Their later work features extended arrangements, rhythmic complexity and integration of the symphonic, "retro" progressive rock sound heard in their earlier works, while also referencing American styles such as country and blues. In describing their music, one reviewer notes "Echolyn is one of the more esoteric and overtly catchy bands of its (prog revival) musical movement. While certainly not opposed to departing on tangents of instrumental virtuosity and extended suites, the band were just as comfortable to lay down subtle grooves and melodic hooks." The band has released nine consistently good studio albums thus far. Standouts include Suffocating the Bloom, As the World, Cowboy Poems Free, Mei, The Ends is Beautiful and Echolyn. Echolyn were asked by magna Carta Records to contribute to a Jethro Tull tribute album and the band chose the song "One Brown Mouse." The album To Cry You a Song: A Collection of Tull Tales was released July 2, 1996.
