Elbow is an English band formed 1997 in Ramsbottom, UK, by Guy Garvey (vocals, guitar), Craig Potter (keyboards, vocals), Mark Potter (guitar, vocals), Pete Turner (bass, vocals) and Richard Jupp (drums). Jupp left the band in 2016. The members have played together since they were 16 years old and were called Mr Soft up until 1997. After winning a local battle of the bands, Elbow signed with Island Records and recorded their first album at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios. However, Island sold out to Universal and the band was dropped in a mass cull and the album was not released. The band continued to record with independent label Ugly Man Records and released three EPs which received airplay on BBC Radio. Their debut album Asleep in the Back was released in May 2001. It was written over the course of six years, and contains six rerecorded tracks from the Real World Studios sessions. Asleep in the Back was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize and earned the band a BRIT Award nomination for Best New British Band. Elbow's musical style sits somewhere between the genres art-rock, progressive-rock and post-rock. The band have cited a number of influences on their music including Genesis, Talk Talk and Radiohead. Guy Garvey has said: "I grew up listening to every Genesis record. I learned to write harmonies by listening to Peter Gabriel." To-date the band has released ten studio albums and several live albums including the excellent The Seldom Seen Kid Live at Abbey Road (2009), recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Standout albums include Asleep in the Back (2001), Cast of Thousands (2003), Leaders of the Free World (2005), The Seldom Seen Kid (2008), and Giants of All Sizes (2019). Their latest album Audio Vetigo (2024) received very positive early reviews.
