Eminem | Artist
Marshall Bruce Mathers III aka Eminem, is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, record executive, film producer, and actor born 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He is consistently cited as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time and was labeled the "King of Hip Hop" by Rolling Stone magazine. As a child Mathers had a tough upbringing moving frequently with his single mother and dropping out of high school at age 17. He grew up in black neighbourhoods of Detroit and was immersed in Rap music from an early age. After doing time at open mic nights and underground hip hop clubs, Mathers formed formed his first group New Jacks with DJ Butter Fingers, in 1988. Eminem was later signed to Jeff and Mark Bass's FBT Productions, and recorded his debut album Infinite, which was a commercial failure upon release in 1996. Eminem had more success when he developed the Slim Shady alter-ego, a sadistic, violent character allowing him to express his anger with lyrics about drugs, rape, and murder. In 1997 he recorded the Slim Shady EP, which had references to drug use, sexual acts, mental instability, violence, poverty and marital and family difficulties. Hip-hop magazine The Source featured Eminem in its "Unsigned Hype" column in March 1998. Mathers went on to record The Slim Shady LP in 1999 and The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000, and both albums sold multiple millions of copies making Mathers one of the world's most successful hip-hop artists. He has released 10 studio albums but none have re-captured the excellence of the earlier works. Eminem won the 2002 Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself". His Academy Award win made him the first rapper to receive the award. He has also received fifteen Grammy Awards and the Global Icon Award at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards.
