Furniture was a British new wave band formed 1979 in London by Jim Irvine (vocals), Sally Still (bass), Maya Gilder (keyboards), Hamilton Lee (drums), Tim Whelan (guitar) and Larry N'Azone (saxophone). The band is best known for the 1986 Top 30 hit, "Brilliant Mind". Their eclectic musical style has been described as a fusion of new wave, jazz, blues and post-punk. The band was noted for the quality of its compositions and lyrics, hailed as "storytelling songwriting at its best". In 1986 Furniture signed to independent label Stiff Records and released the sardonically wistful single "Brilliant Mind" which was accompanied by a moody, jazz-inspired video clip recorded at the Wag Club in Soho, London. They followed up with two excellent albums, The Lovemongers and The Wrong People. Unfortunately for the band Stiff Records then went bankrupt and the company's assets and catalogue were sold to another label, XTT, who pressed no further copies of the singles or albums. This ensured that Furniture could not build on their growing momentum. By 1989 the band had re-signed to Arista records and they released their third album Food, Sex & Paranoia in 1990. When the band split in 1991 Tim Whelan and Hamilton Lee went on to enjoy success with their next project, Transglobal Underground, and Jim Irvin joined Melody Maker as a journalist, writing under the pseudonym of "Jim Arundel". He subsequently became the founding features editor at Mojo, eventually becoming the magazine's senior editor and compiling the acclaimed book "The Mojo Collection". In addition to their three studio albums, the 1991 compilation She Gets Out the Scrapbook: The Best of Furniture is highly recommended.
