Ghost was a Japanese experimental rock band formed 1984 in Kyoto, Japan by Masaki Batoh. The band had a large and varying lineup, including regular players Taishi Takizawa (flute, saxophone), Michio Kurihara (guitar) and Kazuo Ogino (piano, lute, percussion). The group had a reputation for living a nomadic existence, drifting from ruins of ancient temples to disused subway stations around the Tokyo area. Musically the band was influenced by Western groups such as Pink Floyd and Velvet Underground, as well as Japanese psych outfits Taj Mahal Travellers and Flower Travellin' Band. From their debut album Ghost in 1991, through to 2007's In Stormy Nights, the band released a total of eight studio albums, including a collaboration with Damon & Naomi from Galaxie 500, released in 2000. Outstanding albums include Ghost, Lama Rabi Rabi, Snuffbox Immanence and Hypnotic Underworld. Masaki Batoh also releases solo works under his own name, as well as various psych-folk collaborations under the names Cosmic Invention, Sweet & Honey and The Silence.
