God was a British industrial ensemble formed 1987 in London by Kevin Martin (vocals, saxophone) and Nigel Armstrong (guitar). The band expanded to include nine members and released two studio albums before disbanding in 1996. The group's abrasive mix of ambient, dub, free jazz and noise rock earned them recognition from peers such as Ministry, Bill Laswell, My Bloody Valentine, JG Thirwell and John Zorn. The band's first break came when Fall frontman Mark E. Smith asked Martin if he wanted to contribute to Smith's 1988 Disparate Cognescenti compilation. Soon after, Martin met Justin Broadrick, whose project Godflesh he had heard on John Peel's radio show. Broadrick began working with Martin and served as a producer for God's early releases before joining as a member. God's only two studio albums Possession (1992) and The Anatomy of Addiction (1994) are both excellent. Other standout releases include the 1993 live album Consumed and the 1995 EP Appeal to Human Greed. Kevin Martin continued his career as a solo musician, record producer and journalist, often known under his recording alias The Bug.
