Gösta Berlings Saga is a Swedish progressive rock band formed 2000 in Stockholm by keyboardist David Lundberg and drummer Alexander Skepp. Initially formed as a studio venture, the founding duo expand the band in 2004 with the addition of Gabriel Tapper (bass) and Mathias Danielsson (guitar). Einar Baldursson became the new guitarist in 2006, replacing Danielsson who went on to form the prog bands Makajodama and My Brother the Wind. In 2017 Rasmus Booberg became the new guitarist, replacing Baldursson. After a gig at the Emmaboda Festival in Småland, Gosta Berlings Saga landed a recording contract with Transubstans/Record Heaven. The demo became the debut album, Tid är Ljud, after being improved and recorded till the spring of 2006. The band's progressive rock sound embraced dark symphonic nuances, as well as some free jamming fragments and space-rock harmonies. In their work influences can be heard of King Crimson as well as early Swedish avant-prog band Samla Mammas Manna. However theirs is a modern sound without a shred of nostalgia to it, made special by their technical virtuosity and creative originality. Standout albums include Detta har hänt (2009), Glue Works (2011), Sersophane (2016) and the 2019 live album Kontraster. Also recommended is their 2020 release Konkret Musik, which was described by one reviewer as "Morricone meets Magma and Kraftwerk." The band name Gösta Berlings Saga comes from the 1924 Swedish silent-era romantic drama film directed by Mauritz Stiller and starring Greta Garbo.
