Grant Green | Artist
Grant Green was an American jazz guitarist and composer born 1935 in St. Louis, Missouri. Green was a prolific recording artist, mainly for Blue Note Records. As both leader and sideman, Green performed in the hard bop, soul jazz, bebop, and Latin-tinged idioms throughout his career. Musically, Green was influenced by legendary swing guitarist Charlie Christian, and by be-bop saxophanist Charlie Parker. Critic Dave Hunter described his sound as "lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy". Many of Grant Green's recordings were not released during his lifetime. These included sessions with McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Sonny Clark. In 1966 Green left Blue Note and recorded for several other labels, including Verve. From 1967 to 1969 Green was mostly inactive due to personal problems and the effects of heroin addiction. In '69 Green returned with a new funk influenced band. His recordings from this period include the commercially successful Green is Beautiful and the soundtrack to the film The Final Countdown. Green released 21 studio releases, excluding the posthumous many archival releases. He also has several excellent live recordings. Standout albums include Green Street, Feelin' the Spirit, Idle Moments, Talkin' About!, Street of Dreams and Alive! Green's son Grant Green Jr is also a jazz guitarist playing as a soloist and member of Masters of Groove.
