Harry Partch | Artist

Harry Partch was an American avant-garde composer, music theorist, and creator of musical instruments, born 1901 in Oakland, California. Partch was composing at age 14 and dropped out of USC School of Music to undertake self study in San Francisco's libraries. Partch composed with scales dividing the octave into 43 tones at unequal intervals, derived from the natural harmonic series. He was one of the first 20th-century composers in the West to work systematically with microtonal scales. Throughout his career he composed, performed and created new instruments, which have been entrusted to the American composer Charles Corey. Outstanding albums of performances of Partch's music include revelation in the Courthouse Park, The World of Harry Partch, U.S. Highball, The Wayward and Plectra and Percussion Dances.
