Hawklords was an English space-rock group formed 1978 in Devon, UK, by Dave Brock (guitar, vocals), Robert Calvert (vocals), Simon King (drums), Harvey Bainbridge (bass, synthesizer), Martin Griffin (drums) and Steve Swindells (keyboards). The first incarnation of the band lasted between 1978-79, during an inactive period for Hawkwind. Brock, Calvert and King came from Hawkwind, Bainbridge and Griffin came from the group Ark, and Swindells was formerly with Pilot. In 1978 they released their debut studio album 25 Years On, which sounds like a new-wave infused version of mid-period Hawkwind. In 2008 the second incarnation of Hawklords formed formed around Harvey Bainbridge, with ex Bevis Frond drummer Dave Pearce, guitarist and keyboard player Jerry Richards, and ex-Hawkwind vocalist Ron Tree. The band's critically acclaimed 2015 album release, R:Evolution reached number 15 on the UK Top 30 Progressive Rock Chart and was in the top 75 for over two months. It was described as a “full-blown sonic slab of classic British space-rock”, and was nominated for best rock album of 2015 by One World Music Awards. In 2016, the same line up, augmented by guest vocalist Kim McAuliffe released the album Fusion. Hawklords' material comprised a mix of Hawkwind songs plus new material which continued the themes of science fiction and post apocalyptic dystopian society. Standout releases include the studio albums 25 Years on, R:EVOLUTION and Brave New World, plus the live albums The Hawklords Live, Live '78 and The Barney Bubbles Memorial Concert. Barney Bubbles was a graphic artist who did a lot of the album cover art for Hawkwind and other bands, plus he designed their staging and light shows.
