Holger Czukay | Artist
Holger Czukay was a German avant-garde musician born 1938 in Free City of Danzig. He is best known as a co-founder and bassist of the seminal Kosmiche group Can, however he also had a successful solo career and collaborated other experimental artists. Czukay studied music under Karlheinz Stockhausen and was not interested in rock music until he heard The Velvet Underground and Frank Zappa. He formed Can in 1968 and performed most of the recording and engineering for the group, as well as playing bass. As well as his work with Can and his solo works, Czukay recorded albums in collaboration with David Sylvian, Brian Eno, Rolf Dammers and Jah Wobble. He also had side-project bands including Bison with his wife U-She, and Les Vampyrettes with Conny Plank. Outstanding albums include On the way to the Peak of Normal, Full Circle, Plight & Premonition and Flux+Mutability. The 2018 compilation Holger Czukay Cinema is also highly recommended.
