Imperial Triumphant | Artist
Imperial Triumphant is an American experimental metal band formed 2005 in New York City by Zachary Ezrin (lead vocals, guitar), Naargryl Fjellkrieger (bass, backing vocals), Amarok Myrvandr (cello, rhythm guitar, violin) and Maelström (drums). The band has undergone several lineup changes and is currently a three-piece comprising Zachary Ezrin together with Kenny Grohowski (drums) and Steve Blanco (bass, keyboards, piano, vocals). Highly regarded metal music journalist Austin Weber stated "Imperial Triumphant are not only one of the most important U.S. black metal acts currently active, truly carving their own stylistic path, but they are also important to the future of black metal". Ezrin describes the band's music as being shaped by the history of New York City itself: "the New York City influence that shaped the world, embraced the aspect of our sonic pyramid that at its core comes from jazz and applied it to black metal". To-date the band's five studio albums embody their aim to portray the juxtaposition between high society and urban decay via turbulent, frenetic experimental noise and progressive black metal. Their fourth album Alphaville included guest musicians Tomas Haake of Meshuggah plus Colin Marston and Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle. Metal Hammer magazine named Alphaville as the 10th best metal album of 2020. Other standout releases include Vile Luxury (2018), An Evening With Imperial Triumphant - Live at Slipper Room (2021) and their 2022 album Spirit of Ecstasy. Visually, the band's costumes and stage image is something borne out of Fritz Lang's classic Metropolis, in its lavish retro-futurist style.
