Jack Kerouac | Artist
Jack Kerouac was an American novelist and poet of French-Canadian descent born 1922 in Lowell, Massachusetts. He is considered a literary iconoclast and, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, a pioneer of the Beat Generation. Kerouac is recognised for his method of spontaneous prose in classic novels such as On The Road, The Dharma Bums, Desolation Angels, Big Sur, The Subterraneans and Mexico City Blues. In the semi-autobiographical On The Road, Kerouac's character is named Sal Paradise, Neal Cassady is Dean Morriaty, Allen Ginsberg is Carlo Marx, and William Burroughs is Old Bull Lee. Three spoken word albums of Kerouac were released in his lifetime (he died in 1969): Poetry for the Beat Generation (1959) which was accompanied by TV host Steve Allen on piano, Blues and Haikus (1959) with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims on Saxophone, and the compilation Readings by Jack Kerouac on The Beat Generation (1960) which was unaccompanied spoken word. There have been many archival releases since his death.
