John "Jack" White is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer born 1975 in Detroit, Michigan. He is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the duo the White Stripes, but has also had success in the bands the Dead Weather and The Raconteurs, and as a solo artist. Born John Anthony Gillis, he changed his surname to White when he married his high school sweetheart Megan White in 1996. White's younger years were spent listening to classic rock bands such as the Doors, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin before turning more towards the blues, which would influence him in the White Stripes. He mentions Son House and Blind WIllie McTell among his favourite blues guitarists. The White Stripes were active between 1997-2011 and his marriage with Meg ended soon after the band split. White also became involved with The Raconteurs in 2005 and The Dead Weather in 2009, performing and recording with those groups in parallel with The White Stripes in the latter years. His debut solo album Blunderbuss came out in 2012, followed by Lazaretto (2014) and Boarding House Reach (2018). Standout solo albums include Blunderbuss, Lazaretto, Live at Bonnaroo 2014 and the compilation Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016, released in 2016. In addition to his music, White has appeared in numerous films including Cold Mountain, Coffee and Cigarettes, Walk Hard, The Muppets, and The American Epic Sessions documentary. White also founded Third Man Records in 2001, establishing a recording studio in Nashville. In his spare time, White is an avid collector of esoteric objects. Some examples include Lead Belly's New York City arrest record, James Brown's Georgia driver's license from the 1980s, a copy of the first Superman comic from June 1938, and Elvis Presley's first recording from 1953, an acetate of "My Happiness" b/w "That's When Your Heartaches Begin", which he acquired for $300,000. On August 1st 2024 White released the excellent No Name album which has no track details and is packaged to look like a bootleg.
