Jellyfish was an American rock band formed 1989 in San Francisco by songwriters Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning. The duo met at High School and joined their first band Beatnik Beatch, but maintained a side gig, writing commercial jingles for radio. The inital lineup of Jellyfish was Sturmer (vocals, drums, guitar, keyboards), Manning (piano, harpsichord, guitar, vocals) and ex The Three O'Clock guitarist Jason Faulkner (guitar, bass, vocals). A year later they were joined by Tim Smith (bass, vocals), then Eric Dover (guitar, keyboards, vocals) in 1993. The group was known for their blend of 1970s classic power-pop, influenced by bands such as XTC, David Bowie, and The Blue Nile. During their five-year existence, Jellyfish attracted critical acclaim and a devoted cult following, but struggled against prevailing rock trends. They released two superb studio albums; Bellybutton (1990) and Spilt Milk (1993), that proved highly influential to artists in a similar vein. The band broke up in 1994 due to poor record sales and artistic conflicts between the two songwriters. Manning subsequently formed Imperial Drag with Dover, and pursued a careers as a solo artist and session musician. Sturmer worked with the Japanese pop duo Puffy AmiYumi. Since 2017, Manning, Dover, and Smith have recorded together as the Lickerish Quartet. As well as their two studio albums, other standout releases include the archival Stack-a-Tracks (2012) and the live albums Live at Bogart's (2012) and Radio Jellyfish (2013).
