Kayo Dot | Artist
Kayo Dot is an American progressive metal group formed 2003 in Boston, Massachusetts, by vocalist, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Toby Driver. Driver was previously the mainstay of avant-metal band Maudlin of the Well, which broke up in 2003 leaving four excellent albums. Together with four former band members Greg Massi (guitar, vocals), Nicholas Kyte (bass, vocals), Sam Gutterman (drums, vocals) and Terran Olson (keyboards, flute, clarinet, saxophone), Driver created the new band with the objective of taking the metal sound of Maudlin in a more classical direction. Their sound is a mixture of black metal, atmospheric metal and chamber music. Driver cites influences such as The Cure, Scott Walker, Emperor, Ulver, John Zorn, Gorguts and Björk. The band released its debut Choirs of the Eye on John Zorn's Tzadik Records in 2003 and the album attracted very positive critical reviews. Their second album Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue was released in 2006. Since then, Kayo Dot's lineup has changed over the years with Driver continuing to be the mainstay. To-date they have released nine studio albums, standouts include Choirs of the Eye (2003), Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue (2006), Hubardo (2013), Coffins on Io (2014) and Moss Grew on the Swords and Plowshares Alike (2021). Many reviewers regard the first two albums as avant-metal masterpieces.
