Samuel John "Lightnin'" Hopkins was an American country blues singer, songwriter and guitarist born 1912 in Centerville, Texas. His distinctive fingerstyle technique often included playing bass, rhythm, lead and percussion at the same time. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 71 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. His 1968 album Free Form Patterns was backed by Texas Psych band 13th Floor Elevators. He also played in the country Blues trio The Hopkins Brothers with Joel and John Henry Hopkins. Outstanding albums include Lightnin' and The Blues, Lightnin' Hopkins, Blues in my Bottle and Lightnin' Strikes.
