Lightning Bolt is an American noise rock group formed 1994 in Providence, Rhode Island, by Brian Chippendale (drums, vocals), Brian Gibson (bass) and Hisham Bharoocha (guitar, vocals). Bharoocha left in 1997 and Chippendale and Gibson continued as a duo. The band met and formed when the members attended the Rhode Island School of Design. They play loud and aggressive, noise rock, with elements of drone and neo-psychedelia. The group cites composers Philip Glass and Sun Ra as compositional influences, plus they acknowledge the influence of Japanese noise rock bands Boredoms and Ruins. Their first recorded work was the live album Lightning Bolt, released in 1999. Their first studio album release was Ride The Skies (2001). This was followed by two excellent albums Wonderful Rainbow (2003) and Hypermagic Mountain (2005). To-date they have released seven studio albums, the latest being the very highly rated Sonic Citadel (2019). Lightning Bolt are known for their so-called "guerrilla gigs", preferring to play on the floor of the venue rather than the stage. They have also staged concerts in kitchens, on sidewalks and in parking lots.
