Paul Revere & The Raiders | Artist
Paul Revere & the Raiders were an American rock band formed 1958 in Boise, Idaho, by Paul Revere (organ, keyboards, vocals, bass), Mark Lindsay (lead vocals, saxophone, rhythm guitar, vocals), William Hibbard (bass), David Bell (drums), Red Hughes (vocals, drums, percussion, guitar, piano), Robert White (lead guitar), and Richard White (rhythm guitar). The band still carries on today but none of the founding members are present. They saw considerable U.S. mainstream success in the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s, with a brand of psychedelic tinged garage power pop. After charting in 1961 with the minor hit "Like Long Hair" and then in late 1963 with a cover of "Louie Louie", the band was signed to Columbia Records, under the tutelage of producer Terry Melcher. In January 1966 the single "Just Like Me" was a hit, followed by the consecutive Top Tens "Kicks" and "Hungry", thus establishing the band as national stars. Mark Lindsay embarked on a solo career while still a member of the group, charting with two 1970 top 30 singles including the Top Ten hits "Arizona", "Miss America" and "Silver Bird". From early 1970 the band were credited as simply Raiders and In 1971 the hugely successful cover of the song "Indian Nation Reservation" provided the Raiders with a comeback, reaching number one in both the US and Canada. Standout Paul Revere & The Raiders albums include The Spirit of '67 (1966), Revolution! (1967), Something Happening (1968) and Collage (1970). In terms of their legacy, the garage rock revival and grunge movements—and individual acts such as the Paisley Underground—have cited the Raiders as a major influence. The band was also known in their early days for wearing kitsch Revolutionary War costumes as their on-stage attire.
