Steve Unruh is an American progressive folk musician born in Providence, Rhode Island. He is a multi-instrumentalist who draws influences from '70s progressive bands like Yes and Jethro Tull as well as the folk and bluegrass scenes. Unruh works as a one-man-band soloist as well as being a member of the prog-rock band Resistor, and the Finnish based trio The Samurai of Prog. His characteristic style blends an earthy, acoustic sound with soaring violins, mandolin, flute, the occasional keyboard and electric guitar, and delicate vocals. As a recording artist Unruh has released 11 full length albums to-date, dating from his 1997 debut Believe? through to 2019's Precipice. All 11 albums are self-released and not affiliated with a commercial label. In 2020 Unruh released 71319 Live at Monforti Manor, a collaboration with vocalist Phideaux Xavier. Standout albums include Out of the Ashes (2004), Song to the Sky (2005), The Great Divide (2007), Challenging Gravity (2010), and Precipice (2019). The artist's prog-folk style has been compared to earlier artists such as Shawn Phillips, as well as the gentler acoustic side of prog bands like yes and Jethro Tull. Unruh himself cites his main influences as Yes, The Flower Kings, Dream Theater, Rush, U2, John Coltrane, and others. His favourite all-time album is Yes' Close to the Edge. On his web biography Unruh lists his occupation as Sr. Electronic Engineer for Hasbro Toy Group. He is also affiliated with the First Baptist Church in America. On several of his recordings Unruh has gone under the alias Magnus Singlecoyle.
