James Leyland Kirby aka The Caretaker is an English electronic musician born 1974 in Stockport UK. Kirby is a prolific recording artist, the bulk of his work is released under the name The Caretaker however he also releases under the names The Stranger, V/Vm and his given name. His work explores memory, nostalgia and melancholia. He states that his initial inspiration was the haunted ballroom scene in the 1980 film "The Shining" and his early releases consisted of treated and manipulated samples of '30s ballroom pop recordings. His works have received critical acclaim in publications such as The Wire and BBC Music and was a favourite of BBC Radio DJ John Peel. The 2002 album Stairway to the Stars, was the first to attract widespread attention, and has been described as "cavernous, memory-drained unease, with a curious, uncanny beauty". Other outstanding albums include Persistent Repetition of Phrases, Empty Bliss Beyond This World and 2019's superb Everywhere at the end of Time - Stage 6.
