The Cult | Artist
The Cult is a British rock band formed 1983 in Bradford, Yorkshire, by Ian Astbury (lead vocals), Billy Duffy (guitar), Jamie Stewart (bass, rhythm guitar) and Nigel Preston (drums). Drummer Nigel Preston was soon replaced by Les Warner then Matt Sorum. Before settling on their current name in January 1984, the band performed under the name Death Cult, which was a variation of the name of singer Ian Astbury's previous band Southern Death Cult. The band's sound was a fusion of Zeppelin heavy metal with Doors mysticism, and touches of post-punk goth rock. Their second album, the excellent Love, gave them two UK hit singles "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Rain". They tweaked their sound by the fourth album Sonic Temple, to appeal more to the US market and they eventually relocated to the US, where they were hugely successful. After several breaks to recover from hard-living, the band continues to the current day and has released ten studio albums. Standouts include Dreamtime, Love, Electric, Sonic Temple and Beyond Good and Evil.
