The Mark of Cain | Artist

The Mark of Cain is an Australian hard rock, alternative metal band formed 1984 in Adelaide, South Australia, by John Scott (guitar, vocals), Kim Scott (bass) and Gavin Atchison (drums). John Scott and Gavin Atchison had previously been together in punk band Spiral Collapse. In 2001 former Helmet member John Stanier took over as drummer. Their style has been likened to that of Helmet and Rollins Band, yet TMOC pre-date both groups and was influenced by the early work of Joy Division, Big Black and United States hardcore groups. They use militaristic imagery and lyric themes to convey a sense of desperate solitude and human endurance in their music. The band's first two albums Battlesick and The Unclaimed Prize, attracted critical praise and a cult following. Their third album Ill at Ease, financed and produced by Henry Rollins, was their commercial breakthrough. To-date the band has released six studio albums and two live albums. Standouts include Battlesick, Ill at Ease, Rock and Roll, This is This, and Songs of the Third and Fifth.
