Defeated Sanity is a German technical death metal band formed 1993 in Dachsbach, Bavaria, by guitarist Wolfgang Teske and his son, drummer Lille Gruber. Initially the project was meant as a side project, which Gruber described as "just my dad and I jamming". The group's current lineup consists of Gruber (drums), Jacob Schmidt (bass guitar), Josh Welshman (vocals), and Vaughn Stoffey (guitar). They are known for their very brutal, abrasive and intricate style of death metal, while at the same time maintaining almost jazz fusion style influences. Citing influences like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation, Defeated Sanity's genre has also been categorized as progressive death metal. In 2004, Defeated Sanity signed with UK label Grindethic Records to release their full-length debut Prelude to the Tragedy. The album was recorded at Soundforge Studios in Rhauderfehn, Germany. The band produced the record and Andreas Hilbert handled the engineering and mastering. The album received mostly mixed reviews, however Diabolical Conquest praised it saying, "Prelude to the Tragedy is a gleaming chrome harpoon of immaculate technical death metal, deftly interweaving cryptic riff-tangles with convolutional percussive violence to surprisingly comprehensible and utterly enjoyable results." After further lineup changes, the band recorded their second studio album at Soundlodge Studios in August 2006. It was produced and engineered by Jörg Ukenand, and mastered by Robbert Kok of Disavowed. Psalms of the Moribund was released through Grindethic Records in March 2007. Like its predecessor, it received mixed reviews, with Erik Thomas of webzine Teeth of the Divine saying, "With ultra-deep, almost grindcore styled burps layered over complex yet savage riffs, Defeated Sanity, unlike some of their US peers, do manage to throw in some nice grooves and lurches amid the blasting carnage, hence the Suffocation and Devourment comparisons, but otherwise, Psalms of the Moribund is a pretty breakneck assault of squealing, pinch harmonics and ravenous blast beats." Teske left the fold in 2008, leaving Gruber as the sole original member, but the band remained prolific. After inking a deal with Willowtip Records, they released a string of acclaimed records that became increasingly progressive, with elements of classical music and jazz adding nuance to their scorching death metal attack. The band's current day discography comprises eight studio albums, the latest being 2024's excellent Chronicles of Lunacy. Standout albums include Psalms of the Moribund (2007), Chapters of Repugnance (2010), Passages Into Deformity (2013), Disposal of the Dead / Dharmata (2016), and Chronicles of Lunacy (2024). Founding member Wolfgang Teske died from complications involving his cancer on September 12, 2010, little over 2 years after he departed from the band.
