Psychedelic Porn Crumpets is an Australian psychedelic rock band formed in 2014 in Perth by guitarist and singer Jack McEwan, guitarist Luke Parish, drummer Danny Caddy, bassist Wayan Biliondana, and keyboardist Chris Young. Their genre and sound has been compared to that of other popular psychedelic rock bands in Australia, such as King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and Tame Impala. They have self-described their sound as "an energetic mess of colour and tone". The band members were friends prior to the creation of the band, coming together initially as a university project for a unit that Jack McEwan was taking at the time. They then continued to make music for their own enjoyment, as well as for that of their young local community in a garage rave setting in an old horse barn in Leederville, a hip suburb of Perth. They have made a point of retaining a 'DIY' band mantra, recording most of their own songs, as well as aiming to be very hands-on in their own advertisement. In 2017 the band created their own record label, What Reality? Records, which has released all of the band's recordings in Australia, as well as those of People Taking Pictures, the solo project of guitarist Luke Parish. Their debut album High Visceral {Part One} from 2016 gave them an explosive start, attracting rave reviews from Australian and overseas critics alike. The following excepts from RYM give you a taste: "A winning fusion - PPC's first album starts off like a bomb. The trip-psychedelia that blends with hard rock (and at times metal) riffs is a winner, and this is how the group presents itself to the world. The alternation of moments of pure hypnosis with energetic riffs that don't hesitate to wake you up" and.. "Fantastic and Trippy Listen - Some of the most joyous, beautiful, and rockin stuff I've heard in a long time is on this album. It all flows together very well and is the perfect length for what it is." The band followed up the following year with High Visceral {Part Two} which is almost as supercharged as its predecessor. The two thematically linked albums were released as a compilation in 2018. To-date the band has released six studio albums, one live album, an EP, and Twenty Five singles. Standouts include High Visceral {Part One} (2016), High Visceral {Part Two} (2017), And Now for the Whatchamacallit (2019), Night Gnomes (2022), and the live album Levitation Sessions (2022). Luke Parrish aka People Taking Pictures has also Released three albums. Band leader Jack McEwan, who was born in England but migrated to Australia with his family when he was 13, also has a degree in graphic design, which he uses in creating the band's artwork. Concerning the reasoning behind the name of the band, its members have given little explanation, claiming it was chosen at random because they thought it was amusing.
