Phuyu y La Fantasma | Artist
Phuyu y La Fantasma (Cloud and the Ghost) is Chillian post-rock band formed 2020 in Ñuble, Chile, by Rodrigo Romero (vocals, guitar). In 2022 the lineup was expanded to include Ignacio Romero (bass) and Óscar Hernández (drums), followed by the addition of Catalina Parra aka Bitácora Celeste (vocals, keyboards) in 2023. The band's sound draws from traditional "cueca" which is a folk dance and musical style that originated in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. Cueca styled music has a traditional structure with works divided into four "pies" of 3 songs, where each "pie" has its own style, separated by interludes. Phuyu y La Fantasma bring a modern interpretation of this traditional sound, incorporating Noise Rock, Avant-Folk and Post-Rock influences, to create a sound canvas of love and violence. To-date the band has released four studio albums, plus two EP's and several music videos. Standout releases include the albums Anticuecas subterráneas (2021), A| Tetralogía de bichos y setas (2024), and B| Décimas de Phuyu y La Fantasma (2024). The 2023 EP El pacífico albergará nuestros huesos, is also recommended. Founding member Rodrigo Romero also has various experimental side-projects, operating under the names Catalina Lust, Juan Juala, and Ray April. He is also a member of the noise-pop duo Osmiini. Singer Catalina Parra has also released several singles under her aka Bitácora Celeste. Phuyu y La Fantasma have begun to attract very positive reviews of there albums, from outside of South America, such as the following from RYM: "To these Northern Hemisphere ears, it sounds like Albini-esque, Lo-Fi Math Rock crossed with various strains of South-of-the-Border Folk and Pop. Raw, wistful, anxious, organic, and heavy. One of the delights of contemporary Indie is opening your ears to such cross-cultural "Meta/Morfosis." Plus the following recview of their album Anticuecas subterráneas: "Up there with the best albums of 2021, a dizzying mix of genres and styles that feels vitally important and effortlessly entertaining. It feels rooted in its Latin American context.. while still feeling universal." The word "Phuyu" from the band's name is an indigenous Quechua word meaning "cloud."
