Anekdoten is a Swedish progressive rock band formed 1990 in Stockholm by guitarist/vocalist Nicklas Barker, cellist/keyboardist Anna Sofi Dahlberg, bassist/vocalist Jan Erik Liljeström and drummer Peter Nordins. They are notable for the use of the mellotron and their heavy sound dominated by a pounding bass guitar. Their style draws on '70s progressive music, in particular bands like King Crimson. Since 2015 former The Church guitarist Marty Willson-Piper has been touring with the band. Anekdoten has to-date released six consistently good studio albums. Standouts include Vermod ('93), Nucleus ('95), From Within ('99) and Gravity ('03). The 2009 compilation Chapters is also recommended. In addition to their core band activity, Anekdoten's Nicklas Barker and Peter Nordins, together with Stefan Dimle (bass, mellotron) and Swedish progressive rock guitarist Reine Fiske, released the excellent Symphonic Holocaust album under the band name Morte Macabre. The album consists of instrumental themes from horror movies, with heavy use of mellotron and analogue synthesizers.
