Anna Calvi is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist born 1980 in Twickenham, London. Her accolades to-date include three Mercury Prize nominations, one Brit Award nomination, and a European Border Breakers Award. She has been noted by some critics as a virtuoso guitarist, as well as for her powerful, wide-ranging operatic contralto voice. Calvi has spoken of how, as a teenager, she would lock herself in a room for long periods of time, singing along to records by Edith Piaf and Nina Simone. After graduating from the University of Southhampton with a degree in music, having studied violin, she then worked as a private guitar instructor before embarking on a music career. Her 2011 self-titled debut album earned her the European Border Breakers Award and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. she is a spellbinding live performer who creates emotionally intense, dark and hypnotic soundscapes in her songs. All her albums are standouts: Anna Calvi, One Breath, Hunter, plus her most recent album from 2020, Hunted. The 2017 album Live at Meltdown is also recommended. Calvi also composes musical scores for film and television. She wrote the score for the fifth season of the TV series Peaky Blinders, plus the song "Julie" for the soundtrack of The Souvenir, a drama film directed by Joanna Hogg starring Tilda Swinton.
