Bernard Herrmann was an American conductor and composer of motion picture soundtracks, born 1911 in New York City. As a composer he wrote Stage, Chamber and Orchestral works, but is most famous for his 53 movie soundtrack, which include some of the greatest films ever made by Directors such as Orson Wells, Alfred Hitchcock, François Truffaut, Harry Harryhausen, Nicholas Ray, Brian De Palma and Martin Scorcese. Some of his most highly regarded original soundtracks are Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Psycho, North by North West, Fahrenheit 451, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Journet to the Center of the Earth, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, and Taxi Driver. Also highly recommended is The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann, which Herrmann himself conducted. The composer won the 1941 Academy Award for best musical score, and was nominated four more times. In 2005 the American Film Institute ranked Herrmann's scores for Psycho and Vertigo #4 and #12 respectively on their list of the 25 greatest film scores. Herrmann is still a prominent figure in the world of film music today, despite his death in 1975, and his work has influenced and been reinterpreted by artists and producers such as John Zorn, Danny Elfman and George Martin.
