Booker T & the MG's "Green Onions" (1962)

LP (NEW) - Vinyl, Waxtime, Europe, 2018, 950643, 180g Green Vinyl, Remastered, Limited Edition.

Green Onions is the debut album by Memphis TN R&B outfit Booker T & the MG's, released in 1962. The group was controversial for its time comprising, as it did, a mix of black and white musicians - African American organist Booker T Jones and drummer Al Jackson Jr., together with bassist Donald 'Duck' Dunn and guitarist Steve Cropper. But the musical combination between them was as rhythmically tight and soulful as any band then or since. The instrumental single "Green Onions" was a worldwide hit when released and still immensely popular today, characterised by the Hammond M3 organ sound of Booker T. There are other fine tunes on the album in the same vein as the title track. "Green Onions" was ranked No. 181 by Rolling Stone in its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time and is the only instrumental in the list. The track is currently ranked as the 137th greatest track of all time, as well as the best track of 1962 by Acclaimed Music. In 1999, "Green Onions" was given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
