Buddy Miles | Artist

George Allen "Buddy" Miles Jr., was an American rock drummer, vocalist, composer, and producer born 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska. Buddy's father, George Miles Sr., played upright bass for jazz names like Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker and Buddy started playing drums and spending time in recording studios from an early age. At age 16 Buddy first met Jimi Hendrix when they were both sidemen for other artists. In '68 he moved to Chicago and founded the short lived but highly influential psych-blues band The Electric Flag, along with Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites. After Electric Flag folded, Miles formed Buddy Miles Express with Jim McCarty (Cactus) then in 1970 joined Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies along with bassist Billy Cox. Later, he collaborated often with Carlos Santana and worked his own solo projects. Miles recorded some fine psych-tinged funk-rock albums during his career including standout works: Them Changes, A Message to the People, Chapter VII and Live.
