Coaltar of the Deepers is a Japanese alternative rock band formed 1991 in Tokyo by Narasaki (vocals, guitar, programming), Kanno (drums), and Watanabe (vocals). Watanabe left soon after the band's formation and Narasaki took over vocals as well as being the primary musician and songwriter. Although primarily influenced by the shoegaze sound of bands like My Bloody Valentine, COTD's sound also incorporates musical elements as diverse as thrash metal, electronica, neo-acoustic, and post-rock. They are also known for their Prince, The Cure, The Primitives, and My Bloody Valentine covers. Soon after formation they recorded demo tapes which were eventually incorporated into their first release White EP on Strange Records. The EP had former member Watanabe on vocals while Narasaki played guitar. The band were inactive until the end of 1992, when they released their second EP, Queen's Park all you change on Stomly Records. With the release of their third EP, "Sinking Slowly" a month later, they began to attract some critical attention. The band again went quiet until the release of their first album, The Visitors From Deepspace in 1994 on Victor Records. In 1997 the band released Cat EP, and the following year Submerge, an album of remixes, rare and new songs, and a best-of album, Breastroke. 2000 saw the release of Dog EP and another full-length album Come Over to the Deepend, a play on the band's abbreviation COTD. In 2001 they released Robot EP, followed by the album No Thank You, which marked a new direction for the band as they experimented heavily with electronic beats and noises. A new album was released in 2002, newave, followed by two more EP's Mouse and Penguin. From the mid-2000's Narasaki split his time performing and recording with Coaltar of the Deepers, side-projects Sadesper Record, Tokusatsu, and Def.Master, plus composing and producing soundtracks for games and Anime features. To-date COTD has released Eight studio albums, including their most recent hello there which is a collaboration with Boris. Standout albums include Submerge (1998), Come Over to the Deepend (2000), No Thank You (2001), Newave (2002), and Yukari Telepath (2007). Also recommended is the 2007 release EP Box Set 1991-2007 which compiles their excellent EP's. Outside of COTD Narasaki has many side-projects, including Sadesper Record which is more electronic based than Coaltar of the Deepers. He has also contributed to the band Tokusatsu in which the group created the soundtrack for the movie "Stacy: Attack of the Schoolgirl Zombies". Narasaki has also contributed to the video game Persona 4: Dancing All Night, for PlayStation. Narasaki also takes credit for producing all the background music for the anime adaptations Deadman Wonderland, and Paradise Kiss.
