Coil was an English experimental music group founded 1982 in London by John Balance. Initially envisioned as a solo project by singer and songwriter Balance while still in his former band Psychic TV, Balance added ex Throbbing Gristle member Peter Christopherson. This duo remained the core of the band through to its dissolution following Balance's death in 2004. Various musicians were added over the band's lifespan including Steven Thrower, Danny Hyde and Thighpaulsandra. Coil's music style spanned multiple genres including industrial, noise, ambient, neo-folk and minimalism. They treated their works more as magical rituals than as musical pieces, stemming from their pagan beliefs. Coil released 26 studio albums, 11 live albums and 25 EPs and Singles. Many of their works are superb examples of post-industrial, dark-ambient music. Outstanding albums include Horse Rotovator, Love's Secret Domain, Musick to Play in the Dark, Musick to Play in the Dark2, Black Antlers, the Ape of Naples, and the live album And The Ambulance Died in His Arms.
