Daniel Johnston was an American singer-songwriter and visual artist born 1961 in Sacramento, California. Johnston, who has schizophenia and bipolar disorder, is regarded as a gifted musician in lo-fi, and alternative music scenes. Most of his work consists of cassettes recorded alone in his home, and his music is frequently cited for its "pure and childlike soul". He gathered a local following in the 1980s by passing out tapes of his music while working at a McDonalds in Austin Texas. His cult status grew when Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was seen wearing a Tee shirt featuring artwork from Johnston's 1983 album Hi How Are You. In 2005, Johnston was the subject of the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. As well as his solo work, Johnston has collaborated on several albums with Jad Fair from Half Japanese. He also has a side project called Danny and The Nightmares. Outstanding albums include Songs of Pain, Hi How Are You, 1990 and Fun. Johnston also creates the naive pictures for his album artwork. Daniel Johnson passed away on September 11th 2019.
