Dead Can Dance was an Australian musical project formed 1981 in Melbourne by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, who are both vocalists and multi-instrumentalists. Gerrard was previously with the Melbourne post punk band Microfilm and Perry was with Marching Girls. The original lineup of DCD also included Simon Monroe (drums) and Paul Erikson (bass) who were also both with Marching Girls. In 1982 Gerrard and Perry relocated to London and the duo recruited new drummer Peter Ulrich. Upon arrival they signed with the relatively new label 4AD and they became one of that label's leading bands for a decade and a half. Their haunting sound has been linked to the Ethereal Wave along with the likes of Cocteau Twins. Lisa Gerrard also has a successful solo career and composed the soundtrack for the movie Gladiator. Between 1985-94 Dead Can Dance released six masterpiece albums on 4AD: Spleen and Ideal, Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, The Serpent's Egg, Aion, Into the Labyrinth and Toward the Within (live). Other outstanding albums include their debut Dead Can Dance, Anastasis and the excellent compilation Dead Can Dance 1981-1998.
