DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ aka DJSTTDJ is an English electronic duo composed of two anonymous producers and siblings who use the aliases DJ Sabrina and Salem, based in London. The duo's name and their individual aliases are references to the television sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Their main musical influences include plunderphonics musicians and the 2010s UK outsider house scene. They started making house music in 2014, influenced by the music of Aphex Twin. The duo were first exposed to the UK outsider house scene from DJ Seinfeld in 2016. DJ Sabrina has cited albums such as the Avalanches' Since I Left You and Daft Punk's Homework as major influences. The duo incorporate elements of acid house into their music with frequent samples of music from television shows from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. The 2017 debut album was the two-hour-long Makin' Magick. Three more albums followed in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, they released Charmed, a three-hour-long album that became "an underground pandemic hit". In April 2021, they released the single "Try Not to Be Afraid" in collaboration with musicians Delilah Brao, Luke Markinson, and Anyela Gómez. To-date the duo has released nine studio albums culminating in the excellent 2023 release Destiny which has attracted much critical acclaim, with one reviewer ecstatically describing it as "sexy, sensual, loving, ethereal. Soft like pillow. Hypnotic like an oasis in the desert." In any case, the music has developed beyond mere nostalgic ephemera. Rumours have circled about the true identity of DJ Sabrina, including speculation that the artist is actually Richard D James aka Aphex Twin. However an article published in the Guardian newspaper in Jan 2023 gives a more likely basis, revealing the real identity of DJ Sabrina as part-time retail worker Sabrina Spellman, who works in collaboration with singer and guitarist from the band 1975, Matthew Healy. DJ Sabrina has stated that her album cover arts are inspired by pixel art of '90s video games. By the release of 2023's Destiny, DJ Sabrina, who also works with the US based neo-Soul outfit Bulletproof Soul, was being credited as working on projects by herself. Standout albums include Makin' Magick (2017), Enchanted (2019), Charmed (2020), The Makin' Magick II Album (2021), Destiny (2023), and Hex (2024).
