Doctors of Madness was a British protopunk art rock band formed 1975 in London by Richard Strange (vocal, guitar, keyboards), Peter Di Lemma (drums), Urban Blitz (guitar, violin) and Stoner (bass). In 1978 Dave Vanian from The Damned joined the band as vocalist for a short period. Doctors of Madness was active from 1975-78 and released three studio albums. They found cult level acclaim and recognition in the 70's and had little commercial success, but have since come to be regarded as forerunners of the later punk movement. The band was formed in a cellar in Brixton, south London by the composer and lead singer/guitarist Richard Strange, to provide a platform for his musical ideas and compositions analysing urban culture neurosis and systems of control. The sound they developed provided the link between the early 1970s art-rock/glam-rock of David Bowie and Roxy Music, and the later 1970s punk rock of the Sex Pistols and The Clash. Several acts which were to become famous played support to Doctors of Madness during their heyday, including The Sex Pistols (Middlesborough 1976), The Jam (Marquee Club on several occasions 1976), Joy Division (as "Warsaw" Manchester 1976) and Simple Minds (as "Johnny and the Self Abusers" Falkirk 1976). Standout albums include Late Night Movies All Night Brainstorms, Figments of Emancipation, Sons of Survival, and the 1978 compilation Doctors of Madness.
