Element of Crime is a German rock band formed 1985 in Berlin by Sven Regener (vocals, guitar, trumpet), Jakob Ilja (guitar), Paul Lukas (bass), Jürgen Fabritius (saxophone) and Uwe Bauer (drums). Richard Pappik took over as drummer in 1986, and bass duties passed to Christian Hartje in 1995 then David Young in 2002. The band plays melancholic chanson, pop and rock music with guitar, bass guitar, drums and voice/trumpet. Sven Regener, who is the lyricist for the band, is also author of the books Herr Lehman (English title Berlin Blues), Neue Vahr Süd and Der Kleine Bruder. Their second album Try to be Mensch (1987), produced by John Cale, typified their early dark, angst-ridden post-punk style. 1991's Damals hinterm Mond album was their first album to attract strong critical acclaim. That signalled the start of a 15 year creative period where they released seven excellent albums back-to-back, including Damals hinterm Mond, Weißes Papier, An einem Sonntag im April, Die schönen Rosen, Psycho, Romantik and Mittelpunkt der Welt. The band's latest album release to-date is the excellent Schafe, Monster und Mäuse from 2018.
