Fiona Apple McAfee-Maggart is an American singer-songwriter and pianist born 1977 in New York City. Her accolades include one Grammy Award, and an additional seven Grammy Award nominations in various categories. Classically trained on piano as a child, she began composing her own songs when she was eight years old. Her debut album Tidal, containing songs written when Apple was 17, was released in 1996 and received a Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Rock Performance for the single "Criminal". As a politically conscious and highly emotional artist, Apple has had several breaks from music, while recording and working on philanthropic causes. When young, Apple studied the work of early jazz artists Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, and these influences come through in her music. To-date she has released five studio albums: Tidal, When The Pawn, Extraordinary Machine, The Idler Wheel... and Fetch The Bolt Cutters, all of them consistently excellent. On her most recent 2020 release Fetch The Bolt Cutters, Apple is credited as producer, lyricist, vocalist, composer, drummer, pianist and percussionist. She completed the album almost entirely by herself, with the assistance of only recording and mastering engineers.
