Tahliah Debrett Barnett aka FKA Twigs, is an English singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress, born 1988 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Twigs is one of the most exciting new artists to emerge in the past decade. Her sound, which is a blend of Electronic Music, Trip-Hop, R&B and Avante-garde, is based on ethereal multi-tracked vocals over interesting percussive/electro-orchestral arrangements. Sort of like Kate Bush meets Tricky meets Peter Gabriel. The multi-talented Twigs is credited on her albums as vocalist, composer, lyricist, executive producer, synthesiser, drums and programming. Starting out she became a backup dancer after moving to South London at age 17 and made her musical debut with the extended plays EP1 (2012) and EP2 (2013). Her debut studio album, LP1 was released in August 2014 to critical acclaim, peaking at number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and number 30 on the US Billboard 200. It was later nominated for the 2014 Mercury Prize. She released the M3LL155X EP in 2015 to further critical acclaim. Her second studio album, the superb Magdalene was was released in November 2019, and received universal critical acclaim. The album ranked No. 1 on four year-end lists (including Time magazine) and in the top-five of seven other lists. In terms of her musical development Twigs says singers who influenced her were Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Marvin Gaye. In an interview after being shortlisted for the 2014 Mercury Prize Twigs cited Germfree Adolescents by X-Ray Spex as her favourite album of all time. The artist's stage name 'FKA Twigs' derives from the term 'Formerly Known As' together with her nickname 'Twigs' which she acquired because her joints made a cracking sound when she danced.
