Flipper is an American rock band formed 1979 in San Francisco, California, by Ted Falconi (guitar), Steve DePace (drums), Will Shatter (vocals, bass), Ricky Williams (vocals) and Bruce Lose (bass, vocals). Vocalist Williams was credited with naming the band, but was fired before they made any recordings. Many US bands have named Flipper as a seminal influence, including Melvins and Nirvana. Kurt Cobain, who wore a self-made Flipper Tee shirt, and Krist Novoselic cited Flipper as one of Nirvana's influences. The band's sound was characterised by their slowed-down, bass-driven and heavily distorted style of punk, powered by Falconi's uniquely distorted style of guitar. Their debut album was the classic Album: Generic Flipper, which has been described variously as "possibly the most cynical and bitter collection of songs ever heard" and "dirt, drug-fueled, filth-ridden punk at its best". The band released four studio albums, several live albums and several excellent singles including the favourite "Sex Bomb", which was covered by R.E.M. Standout releases include Album: Generic Flipper, Gone Fishin', Public Flipper Limited: Live 1980-1985 and Sex Bomb Baby! compilation.
