Gas | Artist
Gas is the main musical project of German electronic musician and composer Wolfgang Voigt, born 1961 in Cologne. The project was created as an expressive medium inspired by his experiences with taking LSD in the Königsforst, a German forest situated near his hometown of Cologne, for long periods in his youth. Together with his brother Reinhard Voigt, Wolfgang Voigt is considered one of the founders and most influential artists of the minimal techno scene. Together with collaborator Jörg Burger Voigt was influenced by the early acid house in 1988, when both spent time in London. Voigt and Burger then founded the label Trance Atlantic. Under the GAS project name, Voigt has released six albums of ambient techno music, standouts include Zauberberg, Königsforst, Pop and Rausch. Gas takes many of the production and musical elements found in contemporary dub techno and applies them in an almost cosmic context, with lush ambient pads, strings and gradual shifts applied over minimal drums and bass, to induce a euphoric dream-state in the mind of the listener. Voight also releases works under his own name and under 30 alternate artist aliases. Since the early 1990's he has released over 160 albums.
