GoGo Penguin is an English nu-jazz band formed 2012 in Manchester, UK, by pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner. The band's music is built on break-beats, minimalist piano melodies, powerful basslines, drums inspired from electronica and anthemic riffs. Their excellent first two albums Fanfares and v2.0 were released on Gondwana Records. v2.0 was short-listed for the Mercury Prize album of the year 2014. The following year the band signed with prestigious jazz label Blue Note, and released two further albums Man Made Object and A Humdrum Star in 2016 and 2018. The band's 2020 self-titled album release is also highly recommended. Like fellow nu-jazz contemporaries Badbadnotgood, Gogo Penguin is incorporating elements of electronica, trip-hop, jazz, rock and classical music, taking jazz in exciting new directions.
