Gojira is a French death metal band formed 1996 in Bayonne by Joe Duplantier (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mario Duplantier (drums, backing vocals), Jean-Michel Labadie (bass) and Christian Andreu (lead guitar). Originally called< Godzilla, they changed their name to Gojira in 2001. Gojira play a technical and rhythmic style of heavy metal with precision drumming, unusual rhythm patterns, and start-and-stop riffs. They also incorporate textured atmospheric elements and instrumental songs into their music. Lyrically, they touch themes of life, death, rebirth, spirituality, and nature. To-date they have released six studio albums including the superb From Mars to Sirius (2005). Other standout albums include The Link, The Way of all Flesh, L'enfant sauvage, and Magma. Gojira were nominated for two Grammy awards in 2016. Magma was nominated for Best Rock Album, and its second single "Silvera" was nominated for Best Metal Performance. Among their side projects, Joe Duplantier was invited by influential Brazilian band Sepultura to join their new band Cavalera Conspiracy, as a bassist. That band released the album Inflikted in March 2008. Also, the Duplantier brothers formed the avant-metal band Empalot, with Stéphane Chateauneuf.
