Hefner was a British indie rock band formed 1995 in east London by Darren Hayman (vocals, guitar) and Antony Harding (drums). John Morrison (bass) joined in 1996 and Jack Hayter (guitar, vocals) joined in 1999. They started playing live in 1995 and split in 2002 after having recorded four studio albums and a brace of excellent EPs and Singles. They have played together only once since then for a tribute to the DJ John Peel, who was a strong supporter of theirs. Their twee/power pop "urban folk" sound is a vehicle for Hayman's sometimes funny, always clever lyrics which explore teenage and 20 something sexual angst. Their first three albums: Breaking God's Heart, The Fidelity Wars and We Love the City, are consistently good, whereas their final album Dead Media, has a more kitschy synth sound and disappoints somewhat. Their main strength though is in their excellent Singles and EP's, which are showcased in the superb 2000 compilation Boxing Hefner.
