Linton Kwesi Johnson is a Jamaican dub poet born 1952 in Chapelton, Jamaica. In 1963 his family moved to Brixton, London where Johnson was schooled at Tulse Hill School Lambeth then Goldsmiths College in New Cross. Johnson worked closely with British reggae producer Dennis Bovell to develop a powerful dub reggae sound to deliver his politically charged poetry. In 2002 he became the second living poet, and the only black poet, to be published in the Penguin Modern Classics series. His first two albums Dread Beat an' Blood and Forces of Victory are masterpieces. Other outstanding albums include Bass Culture, Making History and Tings an' Times. The 1998 compilation Indepedant Intavenshan: The Island Anthology is also highly recommended.
